Symposium held to discuss the challenges of Poverty in India

Chandigarh, April 25: With a noble initiative to develop more sensitivity and to evolve ways in order to solve the problem of Poverty in India, the Dr. I.T. Group of Institutes organised a National Conference and Business Summit’09 on Corporate Sector’s Contribution to Meet the Challenges of Indian Poverty in the benign presence of distinguished Judge, Politicians, academicians and Corporate bigwigs at CII auditorium in Chandigarh, here today. The Symposium was inaugurated by Hon’ble. Justice (Retd.) J.S. Narang, Director General State Judicial Academy, Chandigarh. Prof. S.C. Vaidya, Dean University Instructions was the key note speaker on this occasion. The uniqueness of the program came in fore when the candidates to the Chandigarh Parliamentary seat, Mr. Pawan Kumar Bansal (Congress) and Sh. Dr. PP Arya, MD, Dr. I.T. Group of Institutes said that the contribution of the corporate sector’s has been restricted to Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) and it remained more of a propaganda mileage rather than real contribution to the welfare of the poor. He said that corporate Sector should design a policy to contain the poverty and socio-economic inequalities which prevail in our society.

Prof. S.C. Vaidya, Dean University Instructions in his keynote address informed the audience that according to a recent estimate of the World Bank one-third of the global poor now reside in India. He said that a 2007 record by the State Run National Commission for Enterprise in the Unorganized Sector (NCEUS) found that 77% of Indians i.e. 836 million people earn less than Rs. 20 per day with most of them working in informal labour sector with neither job nor social security, living in abject property. India is left as one of the world’s poorest countries asserted Prof Vaidya.

15 awarded degrees at CIIS- AYR convocation

Mohali, April 24: As many as 15 students of Continental Institute of International Studies, CIIS, were conferred upon with graduation degrees at the 2nd annual convocation of CIIS- AYR students organized here today at plush lawns of CIIS campus. Students in the streams of Engineering, Creative Industries, Biotechnology and Business were given away the degrees after successful completion of the foundation programme being conducted jointly by CIIS and AYR College, Scotland. The degrees were given by Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee- Director of Thapar University, Patiala. The foundation programme would enable the students to carry ahead with their further studies abroad to seek Higher National Certificates/ diplomas and Degrees in Scotland.

Mohali, 23 April: The students of Rayat - Bahra group achieved a rare feat by securing 50% of the top merit positions in Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and 40% in Electronic and Communication Engineering (ECE) for the year 2008, among all the 64 engineering colleges affiliated to PTU, Jalandhar. Also some of the institute students of all the other braches of engineering have also featured in the merit list of PTU examination.
The toppers of Rayat - Bahra Institute of Engineering & Bio Technology , Sahuran and Rayat Institute of Engineering & Information Technology , Railmajra were felicitated by Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Vice Chairman of Rayat and Bahra Group of Institutions at a special function organized in their honor in Sahauran campus, near Mohali here today. While speaking on this occasion S. Gurvinder Singh Bahra applauded the exemplary feat attained by the students and described it as a moment of great pride for the entire Rayat & Bahra Group. He announced 25% reduction in tuition fee for students scoring more than 85 % marks or bagging 1-10 positions in PTU examination. Healthy Food competition At Ashmah International School

Mohali, 22 April: In an effort to inculcate healthy eating habits among school children, the Ashmah international school in Chandigarh, now, not only imparts quality education to its students but makes an effort full-fledged development of a child’s personality.

The school teaches students the healthy way of life. The school observed the “healthy food day”, with great enthusiasm at he school premises. The main aim of observing
such an occasion was to make our students aware of the benefits of healthy food in our life, said he Principal Mrs Rajinder Ghuman.

With an aim of involving parents in this “healthy food” project, the students were asked to bring tiffin that contains food that is healthy. This could be a traditional dish or even a salad. Though junk food was the present generation’s delight, the importance of a healthy diet needed to be justified to our young ones.

With parents being equally concerned for their young one’s health, their involvement was ensured in preparing the healthy foods. The result was that parents sent a large variety of healthy foods like sprouts, fresh fruits, boiled vegetables, salads, juices and milk products. The students were encouraged to bring such healthy dishes in their
everyday tiffin.

Mrs Ghuman said that “healthy food day” was just another step in fulfilling our endeavor of a healthier and stronger country.

TWO rare pediatric surgeries at Cheema Medical Complex,Mohali

Mohali, April 21. Two rare surgeries have been performed at Cheema Medical Complex here in Mohali. These have been performed on small children who were facing defects in the genital area.

While detailing about the surgeries Dr Ajaiwant Cheema, Managing Director, Cheema Medical Complex, said that the first case was of four year old Rabia, a resident of Ludhiana who was suffering from urogenital sinus and had complaints of no control over passing urine. She was passing urine continuously into her vagina due to a wrong congenital defect. Because of this the urine carrying tubes from the kidneys were emptying into the bladder and also the sexual tract (Vagina).

Due to this she and her parents had a difficult social problem and were worried about her later married life. The child also had problem in going to school in such a state. The parents had gone to big institutions like in Ludhiana and some private surgical centre in Ludhiana but could not find a curative remedy for her.

The parents, told reporters that they then searched over the internet for a solution to their child’s problem and contacted Dr. Money Gupta who is a pediatric surgeon based at Cheema Medical Complex, Mohali. The child was examined here and a surgical plan was made. In addition to the defect he baby also had bilateral double ureters.

Dr Gupta explained that she endoscopically saw opening of a urinary tract into sexual tract and separated that opening from it. We reconstructed the urinary opening into its normal place and reconstructed sexual tract. Now she is passing urine normally, she is having control of urine. She is going to school. Also her sexual tract is normal and she will have completely normal married life.

The second case was of a young boy who had a buried penis and a webbed penis added Dr Cheema.

Mukul 14 yrs old boy resident of Ambala had his penis hidden into scrotal skin. Whole of his penis was concealed into scrotum and also there was web between penis and scrotum.

This would have hampered his normal sexual life. Dr Gupta said after examining the child planned the surgical separation of penis from scrotum. He surgically separated the penis from scrotum and also cut the web which was present between penis and scrotum. Hence the Penis became clearly visible outside and then a skin cover was given to it. Now the child would have a normal sexual life and will be able to procreate.

1500 participate in AIEEE ’09 mock test by CIIS

Chandigarh, April 19: Mock AIEEE-2009 test organized by Continental Institute for International Studies (CIIS), Mohali at Guru Nanak School, Sector-36, Chandigarh, here today, received an overwhelming response with over 1500 students from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and surrounding region participating. Aimed at testing skills ahead of AIEEE ’09, the mock test was organized free of cost with a bounty of prizes aimed at encouraging the students.

The long queue of the participating students accompanied by their parents and relatives was witnessed since morning. The huge turnover of students reaching from various parts of the country exemplified their zeal and enthusiasm for writing the mock AIEE test.

Informing about the immensely successful mock test Col Karamjit Singh, Institute Director said that the mock test was held with an endeavor to support the students in preparing for the various upcoming entrance exams. This will also help them to evaluate the status of their preparations and to ascertain the areas where more preparation is required.

Students seemed very upbeat and felt that this kind of exercise really benefit them and enable them to get the real feeler of the upcoming exams.

Chandigarh, April 17. In an effort to help children of poor people, the Mohali-based Grecian Super specialty hospital, has decided to give a handsome concession on its own to children who are suffering from heart diseases.
As part of the efforts, the hospital today announced that it will wave-off Rs 50,000 on the life-saving heart surgeries needed by each of these children, said Shachi Joshi Samra, the Medical Director of the hospital. To bridge the remaining cost that is about Rs 1 lakh in each case the hospital has appealed to philanthropists to donate the money so that these surgeries can be carried out immediately. Chandigarh, April 17. Ecology of the earth is being adversely affected by humanity and the damage has reached critical proportion. The ecological changes have started casting serious doubt about the survival of the planet itself. Urgent and aggressive efforts are the need of the hour to reverse this damage . This fact was underlined tellingly by small children of the Carmel Convent School by organizing an” Ecofriendly Carnival “ in sector -33 park recently.
The event a brainchild of Shreya Bali and Meher Virk, both of class V, was a huge success and evoked great interest amongst children. The other key organizers of the event were Ananya Sharma, Anushka Tayal , Rehmat Virk ,Idika Mittal,Gurinayat Brar, Vidisha Arora and Eknoor Chahal.
About fifty children participated enthusiastically in the day long festivities. The carnival was marked by games, tambola and an exhibition where beautifully designed souvenirs were displayed and eventually sold to the participants. All there little souvenir had been crafted by children themselves and the preparations for the event had been going on for more then a month.
A “free sapling” of a plant was given to each child to drive home the importance of eco conservation. When most children after the exam would be busy playing or planning vacations, these children were concerned about the ecology and making a statement for adults to take note of . Parent of the children were curious spectators keeping a watchful eye on the proceedings.”
Everyone including children need to think about the ecology of the planet for the survival of mother earth” said Mehar Virk while disposing of one of her painting in the sale.
Shreya Bali said that if all of us inculcate little eco friendly habit in our day to day chores, we can make a positive contribution .We must act now if our future generations have to survive with a good quality of life, she added . 1st Annual Convocation of Rayat – Bahra College of Education

Mohali , April 17. The Rayat-Bahra group took another major step forward by conducting first ever convocation of Rayat – Bahra College of Education here today in the Campus at Sahuran, Mohali .

As many as 300 students of RBCE were privileged to receive the bachelors degree from the renowned educationist, Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, who was the chief guest at the convocation. Students, who passed out in three previous sessions 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 were awarded degrees today.

The students of previous sessions were awarded prizes for their academic achievements. Manbina Sethi (1st), Nancy (2nd) and Rupinder Kaur (3rd) for the session 2005-06, Seema Saini(2nd position in the university & 1st in the college) Inderdeep Kaur (2nd), Varun Bansal (2nd) and Pooja Pandey (3rd ) for the session 2006-07. Anupreet Kaur (1st), Nancy garg(2nd) and Jagwinder Kaur (3rd)for the session 2007-08.

Mohali, April 8: As many as 82 students from Rayat- Bahra group of institutions have been selected by IT giant IBM for its vacancies across India after a placement drive organized at Rayat - Bahra campus. 66 students from Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, RIEIT, Railmajra and 16 students from Rayat-Bahra Institute of Engineering and Bio Technology, RBIEBT, Mohali have made it to the list of final selections after a comprehensive placement drive which sought to appoint Software Trainees from amongst 2010 B. Tech pass outs from the institute.

Sardar Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Vice Chairman, Rayat-Bahra group informed that the selection comes particularly as a major push to the placement activity in the region in wake of ongoing downturn in economy and a negative sentiment of job cuts and lay offs across the world. Mohali April 07, 2009: Orientation day was today held at ‘The Millennium School’, Mohali to give parents an over view of the school and apprise them with the new age learning methodologies and techniques being adopted at the school.

The school adopted a unique means to bring alive for the parents, the experience of being a student of TMS. The parents sat in a classrooms environment to understand how the new technologies were being adopted by the schools to enhance the teaching learning experience and produce better learning outcomes among all students.

Keeping in mind the key concerns of all parents of school going children- that their child should receive the best possible education and should be treated as an individual and not just as part of a crowd, TMS made a very interesting and informative presentation to the parents that outlined how the school has been successful in this regard. By adopting the ancient ‘Gurukul’ system, where the focus is on the individual and on personalized learning, TMS has achieved its objective of being a totally child-centric school. By seamlessly blending the best of traditional and modern methodologies, TMS is catering to the needs of all their students in an effective manner.

Parents were told how the Millennium Learning System (MLS) created by the R & D division of Educomp Solutions, that forms the basis of the TMS curriculum, is a unique system, for it takes into account many key things that are generally neglected in schools---first and foremost the fact that all children learn differently. Just as no two children are alike in habits or physical appearance, similarly the way they learn may be just as unique. In education this is referred to as learning styles. It is not what a person learns but how he learns.

There are different ways of describing learning styles, but the simplest learning style is the VAK standing for Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. Helping children to learn based on their natural learning style helps them acquire knowledge in a meaningful way---this is how it is done at TMS.

To further elaborate on learning styles, three lessons were conducted by teachers, where volunteer parents acted as students to give them a taste of how teaching is conducted in the classrooms. The lesson for nursery children was about teaching the use of the fine motor skills in the form of making a table mat by vegetable printing; in the EVS lesson for class V, a lesson was taught on ‘Inside our Earth’ through an activity which brought clarity to the concept. A lesson on ‘circle’ and its elements was effectively taught through an activity and the Smart Class (digital content) module.

The parents were, thereafter, taken on a round of the classrooms, where they met all the teachers and were informed about other unique aspects of the Millennium Learning System.

Chandigarh, April 7. The ongoing economic recession can affect the health of the trading community, the business men and industrialists. The incidence of heart disease is increasing among these people at an alarming rate, said noted intervention Cardiologist Dr.H.K.Bali and exhorted them to shun sedentary habits and change life style. Dr Bali was addressing Chandigarh Beopar Mandal on the eve of World Health Day. The meeting was attended by about 300 members and it was followed by an interactive session where members enthusiastically asked wide ranging questions on heart disease and their prevention.

Stress levels have increased particularly in the last year due to economic slowdown and decrease in exports. Joining cultural and religious groups can help tackle stress, suggested Dr.Bali. The affected people should share their sorrows and happiness with family members and friends will also help where people should cut – off from the world completely.

Most people in these three categories (traders, business men and industrialists) have a sedentary life style with very little physical activity. Job profiles involve long hours of sitting. Diet is unregulated besides being rich in fats and trans fatty acids. Most of them eat out very frequently, some even do that every day. Restaurants food is very rich in saturated fats and also in trans fats. Heavy alcohol intake adversely affects heart and even more damaging are the snacks with the alcohol, warned Dr.Bali.

Stress significantly affects health by producing high Blood pressure, aggravating diabetes and increasing heart disease. There is urgent need to regulated diet, moderate alcohol consumption and inculcate regular physical activities.

Dr. Bali suggested that refined oils should be used as a cooking medium and outdoor dining at restaurants should be cut down. Consumption of regular small meals should be the norm while a heavy dinner should be avoided. Mid- meal snacking has to be avoided and consumption of fruits should be encouraged, suggested the doctor.

A wholesome meal should have green leafy vegetables. Non – vegetarians should consume fish and red meat should be avoided.

Besides this at least 30 minutes of exercise should be made a part of the daily routine. Moderately vigorous exercise, including brisk walking, jogging, cycling. Swimming and outdoor games should be undertaken on most days of the week. People with heart disease and elderly individuals should consult a Cardiologist before starting exercise regimen. Yoga is an excellent way of avoiding life style disease including high BP, diabetes and heart disease, added Dr.Bali, He further added that although we should try to avoid heart disease, one can still look forward to a good quality of life and a heart attack given the medical advances in managing heart attack and systematic rehabilitation after a heart attack, Concluded Dr. Bali.

New Delhi, April 4: Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, BJYM, the youth wing of BJP is all set to launch a tirade against money laundering and black money hoarded illegally by Indians in their Swiss bank accounts through a sustained series of seminars and awareness generating programmes all across the country.

The seminars beginning from 6th April will be carried on till 12th April as part of youth wing’s initiative to awaken the consciousness of righteous Indians against ill begotten money which has been siphoned off for decades from India into ever inflating Swiss bank accounts. An announcement to this effect was made here today during a press conference addressed by BJYM National President Shri Amit Thaker.

Shri Thaker informed media persons that morcha’s campaign against enormously accumulated unaccounted for wealth in Swiss bank accounts comes close on the heels of BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Shri L K Advani’s call to address the vital issue which potentially can have major impact of India’s economic prospects as well. Morcha will not only organize seminars all across India but will also mobilize public opinion against black money through Internet by seeking online responses on its web site www.bjym.org, announced Shri Thaker. Indians can now raise their voice against ill gotten money which lies in Switzerland based accounts of Indian tax evaders, corrupt individuals, criminals, corrupt politicians and others.

Expressing concern over the unimaginable extent of unaccounted for Indian wealth in Swiss accounts Shri Thaker shared the extreme exasperation felt by Shri Advani towards the issue which holds the key to bringing guilty to book even as bringing back the extraordinary wealth back to India is a core issue. The estimated money deposited in Swiss bank accounts by Indians grew from a whopping 130 lakh crores in 2001 to a staggering 285 lakh crores in 2007, an increase of over 80% in six years. With the tone of murky financial dealings having been set way back in 80s by the infamous Bofors scam involving former Prime Minister and senior Congress functionaries, the phenomenon seems to have assumed greater proportions in following decade, lamented Shri Thaker who called upon Indians to rise against this hoarding and cheating on a massive scale.

The black money must be brought back to India and circulated among its rightful owners i.e. Indian citizens and tax payers who have been paying the price for the misdeeds of their political masters who have turned blind eye towards tax evaders, corrupt individuals, criminals, corrupt politicians and others for decades now, asserted Shri Thaker.

BJYM will take upon itself the task to shake the political consciousness from its deep slumber which has spelled poverty and disparity in past 60 years since Independence. Mohali, April 4. Education of a child is an ongoing and concentrated
effort in which the school along with the parents is joint partner. Changing educational trends and dynamic technology necessitates, that the methodology of instructions be reviewed in order to provide the best for the children. Keeping this in view, an orientation programme was conducted for the parents at Ashmah International School on Saturday, the 4th of April, 2009. More than 200 parents attended the orientation program.

The mission of the school is to offer quality education for the realization of the full potential of each child and to instill values and positive attributes for their success in life. Various issues concerning the latest teaching methodologies and new technological trends were discussed. All agreed that development of the child should be the focus and concern of both the parents and the school faculty.

The school principal Mrs. Roopinder Ghuman said,” What sculptor is to a block of marble, education is to the soul”, and she promised to provide such a fulfilling educational experience to the children which is the dream of every parent. Teacher parent interaction was organized where the curriculum and the activities were the main agenda. Earlier all on 3rd of April 2009 the school management organized FIP (Faculty Improvement Programme) in order to update the teaching skills of the school faculty and to apprise them about the latest development in teaching technology and for structuring the teaching
material keeping in view the needs of the growing students. The programme was conducted by ITFT faculty in the school premises.
